Astronomy and Astrophysics Convective Core Mixing: a Metallicity Dependence?

چکیده
The main scope of this paper is to investigate the possible existence of a metallicity dependence of the overshooting from main sequence stars turbulent cores. We focus on objects with masses in the range ∼ 2.5M ⊙ − ∼ 25M ⊙. Basically, evolutionary time scale ratios are compared with star numbers ratios on the main sequence. Star populations are synthesized using grids of evolutionary tracks computed with various overshooting amounts. Observational material is provided by the large and homogeneous photometric database of OGLE 2 project for the Magellanic clouds. Attention is paid to the study of uncertainties: distance modulus, intergalactic and interstellar reddening, IMF slope and average bina-rity rate. Rotation and chemical composition gradient are also considered. The result for the overshooting distance is l SMC over = 0.40 (Z 0 = 0.008) suggesting a possible dependence of the extent of the mixed central regions with metallicity within the considered mass range. Unfortunately it is not yet possible to fully disentangle effects of mass and chemical composition. A&A manuscript no. ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS A calibration of the mixing-length for solar-type stars based on hydrodynamical simulations I. Methodical aspects and results for solar metallicity
Based on detailed 2D numerical radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) calculations of time-dependent compressible convection, we have studied the dynamics and thermal structure of the convective surface layers of solar-type stars. The RHD models provide information about the convective efficiency in the superadiabatic region at the top of convective envelopes and predict the asymptotic value of the entr...
متن کاملFull spectrum of turbulence convective mixing II. Lithium production in AGB stars
We present results from new, detailed computations of lithium production by hot bottom burning (HBB) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of intermediate mass (3.5 ≤ M ≤ 6M ). The dependence of lithium production on stellar mass, metallicity, mass loss rate, convection and overshooting are discussed. In particular, nuclear burning, turbulent mixing and convective overshooting (if any) are sel...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Barnes–Evans relations for late–type giants and dwarfs Abstract. The visual surface brightness of K/M giants and dwarfs with near-solar metallicity differ slightly in agreement with the gravity effects predicted by recent theoretical models. We show that M-dwarfs display also a metallicity dependence of the surface brightness in the infrared K-band in agreement with t...
متن کاملDiffusive convective overshoot in core He - burning intermediate mass stars . I : the LMC metallicity
We present detailed evolutionary calculations focused on the evolution of intermediate mass stars with 3M ⊙ ≤ M ≤ 9M ⊙ of metallicity typical of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), i.e. Z = 0.008. We compare carefully the models calculated by adopting a diffusive scheme for chemical mixing, in which nuclear burning and mixing are self-consistently coupled, while the eddy velocities beyond the for...
متن کاملASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Low - frequency p - and g - mode solar oscillations
In order to help the detection and identification of low-frequency p-and g-modes in the solar spectrum observed by ground-based networks and SoHO experiments, we study the properties of low degree (=0-6) low-frequency (100-2000 µHz) solar oscillations. The frequencies of p-and g-modes have been computed for a set of solar models with updated physics. We point out the specific properties of the ...
